Fabrinet Completes Closing of the Acquisition of
3 JDS Uniphase Plants
Fabrinet Gains Foothold in China and Enhances Optical Component Manufacturing Business
San Francisco, CA – May 31, 2005 – Fabrinet, an engineering and electromechanical manufacturing services company, announced the closing of its acquisition of three JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ: JDSU; and TSX: JDU) manufacturing sites in Mountain Lakes and Ewing, New Jersey and Fuzhou, China. The acquisition serves to strengthen Fabrinet's position as a leading manufacturer of optical sub-assemblies, components and modules by establishing Fabrinet in the China market, with an approximately 225,000 square foot manufacturing center. The transaction also enhances Fabrinet's engineering and manufacturing technology base in optical amplification, optical bonding, crystal fabrication and standard borosilicate, clear fused quartz, and synthetic fused silica.
The Fuzhou , China operation, employing over 500 engineers, technicians, and skilled operators, will retain the name Casix and continue in its present state to manufacture primarily crystals and precision optics for Fabrinet's internal consumption and external customers throughout Europe, North America, and Asia. The New Jersey sites are expected to consolidate into one location specializing in standard and synthetic glass products for optical communications, medical, and industrial markets.
“The JDS Uniphase and Fabrinet teams have worked together to ensure a smooth transition of the China and New Jersey sites to Fabrinet,” commented Tom Mitchell, founder and CEO of Fabrinet. “The transition was certainly made easier due to the high quality standards and processes JDS Uniphase employed at all three locations. We are now in the glass and crystal businesses and looking forward to leveraging those capabilities vertically and to expanding those markets in China and throughout the world.”
